Does Showering With the Toilet Lid Open Cause Acne?

Summary of Article

Fact or Fiction: TikTok Claims Debunked

Another day, another viral TikTok video with some pretty ballsy claims. Don't get us wrong: we love the video-sharing platform. It's helped us discover some of our favorite hair hacks, the best new beauty products, and out-of-the-box nail trends. However, we all know the claims on the app can sometimes get a little . . . farfetched. We haven't forgotten about the time someone tried to convince us that using hemorrhoid cream would get rid of under-eye bags (just don't do it), so it's safe to say we take all TikTok claims with a grain of salt.

The Claim: Showering With the Toilet Lid Open Causes Acne

The latest claim on TikTok suggests that showering with the toilet lid open can cause acne. User Kristina Nguyen's video went viral, garnering over 1.3 million likes. In the video, she claims that the humidity and water droplets from the shower can cause germs to float around and land on various surfaces, including the skin, which can lead to acne. But is there any truth to this?

Expert Opinion: Dermatologist Weighs In

We reached out to Suneel Chilukuri, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and director of cosmetic surgery at Refresh Dermatology, to get his take on the TikTok claim. According to Dr. Chilukuri, showering with the toilet lid open is highly unlikely to cause acne. He explains that while studies have shown that flushing the toilet can release bacteria and viruses into the air, these microorganisms are not responsible for acne.

What Causes Acne?

Dr. Chilukuri clarifies that the main causes of acne are the blocking of follicular openings by overproduction of sebum and the build-up of propionibacterium acnes in the skin. The increased concentration of p acnes triggers an immune response, leading to redness and inflammation. Therefore, the bacteria and viruses released into the air during toilet flushing do not contribute to acne.

No Acne Risk When Going Number Two

Dr. Chilukuri also addresses the claim that going to the bathroom with your hair down can cause acne. He states that there is no increased risk of acne when pooping with your hair down. The bacteria and viruses released into the air during bowel movements are not known to cause breakouts.

Should You Flush With the Toilet Lid Closed?

While flushing the toilet with the lid down can decrease the amount of bacteria and viruses released into the air, there is still some aerosolized escape of these microorganisms. However, as Dr. Chilukuri emphasizes, none of these bacteria cause breakouts. He does recommend closing the toilet seat before flushing to avoid spreading germs on your phone.

Clearing Your Breakouts

If you're looking for ways to clear your breakouts, Dr. Chilukuri suggests using benzoyl peroxide products, such as the PanOxyl 4% Creamy Facial Wash, to protect your skin from bacteria. He also recommends using the Hyacyn Active Purifying Mist, which contains stabilized hypochlorous acid that kills bacteria, fungus, yeast, and some viruses on contact.

The Bottom Line

While TikTok claims may be entertaining, it's important to rely on expert opinions when it comes to your health. According to dermatologist Dr. Chilukuri, showering with the toilet lid open does not cause acne. Instead, focus on proven methods to treat and prevent breakouts. And if you're curious about your acne type, take a quiz to help you develop a personalized treatment plan.
