According to board-certified trichologist Helen Reavey, stress can cause new hair growth to come in gray. This is because stress triggers the body's production of free radicals, which can damage the cells responsible for producing melanin in hair follicles. As a result, the hair grows translucent without any pigment, appearing white or gray.

How Stress Affects Hair Follicles

When the body is under stress, the hormone cortisol is released throughout the body, including the hair follicles. This stress hormone causes the melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, to replicate more rapidly into pigment cells. This process ultimately leads to the permanent loss of melanin-producing cells, resulting in the formation of white or gray hair fibers.

Embracing the Natural Aging Process

While stress can contribute to the early onset of gray hair, it's important to remember that going gray is a natural part of the aging process. As we age, hair follicles naturally produce less melanin, leading to the growth of translucent hair without pigment. So, if you're noticing more grays accompanied by stress, making some lifestyle changes may help, but ultimately, embracing the natural changes that come with aging is key.
