Panera Removes Controversial Charged Lemonades from Self-Serve Stations Amid Lawsuits and Health Concerns

Quick Summary of Article

Chain takes action to limit access to caffeinated beverages

Panera Bread is facing backlash and multiple lawsuits over its Charged Lemonades, with customers blaming the drinks for health issues and even deaths. In response, Panera has made a significant change by removing the controversial beverages from self-serve stations in some of its locations.

Customers now have to rely on employees to get their Charged Lemonades

Several Panera locations, including one in Louisville, KY, have stopped offering Charged Lemonades in the self-serve areas. Instead, customers are directed to pick up their orders from the Rapid Pick-Up shelf or at the pick-up counter. This new policy requires customers to ask an associate for assistance in locating their drinks.

Lawsuits allege negative health effects and even deaths caused by the drinks

Last week, a 28-year-old occupational therapist from Rhode Island, Lauren Skerritt, filed a lawsuit against Panera, claiming that she experienced heart palpitations and was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat after consuming the Charged Lemonades. Two other customers, Sarah Katz and Dennis Brown, allegedly died from cardiac arrest after drinking the caffeinated beverages. While Skerritt had no underlying medical conditions, Katz and Brown had pre-existing heart conditions and typically avoided energy drinks.

Panera stands by the safety of its products

Panera has expressed sympathy for the deaths but maintains that its products are safe. The chain added warnings in its stores and on its website after the lawsuit over Katz's death was filed, advising customers to consume the drinks in moderation and stating that they are not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, nursing women, and pregnant individuals.

Charged Lemonades come in three flavors and contain varying amounts of caffeine

Panera currently offers three flavors in its Charged beverage line: Strawberry Lemon Mint, Mango Yuzu Citrus, and zero sugar Blood Orange. The drinks contain between 210 and 236 mg of caffeine, depending on the flavor and size. The Mayo Clinic suggests that most healthy adults can consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day.
