Ilana Glazer's New Film "Babes" Showcases Hilarious Pregnancy Journey

Brief Article Overview

Fans of "Broad City" Rejoice!

Fans of the hit Comedy Central series "Broad City" will be thrilled to hear that Ilana Glazer's new project, "Babes," shares many similarities with the beloved show. Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival on March 9, this film is all about female friendship and features plenty of absurdly funny situations.

From One-Night Stand to Motherhood

In "Babes," Glazer's character, Eden, finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand. She leans on her best friend Dawn, a mother of two, for guidance throughout her journey to motherhood. The film follows Eden from pregnancy to beyond, and Glazer wore a prosthetic belly to portray the different stages of gestation.

The Challenges of a Prosthetic Belly

Creating a realistic prosthetic belly was no easy task. Since the film was shot out of narrative order and covers the entire pregnancy, makeup department head Kristy Strate had to find a solution that Glazer could easily take on and off. She found a premade silicone belly that fit Glazer perfectly and could be rolled up and placed in the right position. Strate then had to paint the belly to match Glazer's skin tone, adding freckles and a pregnancy line to make it as realistic as possible.

A Nod to Beyoncé

Just like Glazer herself, Eden is a huge Beyoncé fan. In one scene, Eden recreates Beyoncé's iconic 2017 pregnancy reveal photoshoot. Strate worked with the hair and wardrobe departments to capture the essence of the original portrait, complete with a veil, a pretty bra, and an exposed pregnant belly. The focus of the makeup was to create a natural glow, which was achieved by mixing Anastasia Beverly Hills Cream Bronzers with body lotion and buffing it onto Glazer's skin.

The Power of Subtle Makeup Changes

While "Babes" had a few bold makeup moments, the majority of Eden's looks were kept simple and glowy. Strate used hydrating and cream-based products to achieve the coveted pregnancy glow. She started with a cold jade roller to wake up Glazer's skin and used moisturizing products to prep the skin. For the base makeup, she used a mix of foundations and a concealer to create a flawless complexion. The color products were switched up based on the time of year to subtly convey the narrative.

Get Ready for "Babes"

"Babes" is set to hit theaters on May 17. Don't miss this hilarious and heartwarming film that explores the ups and downs of pregnancy and the power of friendship.
