"Some people report increased acne after taking biotin," notes dermatologist Marisa Garshick. This might be due to biotin's potential to disrupt the balance of B vitamins in the gut, particularly affecting vitamin B5 levels, which is known to help prevent acne.

Moreover, biotin's impact extends beyond skin concerns, potentially altering thyroid function tests. "Taking biotin supplements may lead to misleading thyroid test results," adds dermatologist Omer Ibrahim, indicating a falsely low thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and elevated levels of triiodothyronine (T3) or thyroxine (T4).

Can Biotin Be a Cure?

While some believe biotin can combat acne, evidence supporting this claim is limited and often involves biotin as part of a combination treatment. "It's unclear how much biotin alone contributes to skin improvements," states Dr. Garshick. The effectiveness of biotin in treating acne, separate from other ingredients, remains to be conclusively determined.
